Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

At Cranleigh C of E Primary, all children in Key Stage 2 learn French. We use the Language Angels scheme to make lessons engaging, enjoyable and carefully sequenced, so that knowledge builds year on year.

Why French?
• Gives children the chance to communicate in another language.
• Builds curiosity and awareness of other cultures.
• Develops transferable skills such as listening, memory and problem-solving.
• Prepares children for secondary school language learning and beyond.

How we teach
With Language Angels, children progress in:
• Phonics – recognising and using French sounds.
• Vocabulary – learning words and phrases around exciting topics.
• Grammar – applying rules to speak and write with accuracy.
• Speaking & Listening – songs, stories, role play and conversations.
• Reading & Writing – from single words to sentences and short paragraphs by Year 6.

Lessons are interactive and accessible for all, with plenty of challenge for confident learners.

What children achieve
By the end of Year 6, pupils will:
• hold a short conversation in French,
• read and understand simple texts,
• write using familiar vocabulary and grammar,
• show confidence and enthusiasm about languages and cultures.

Progress is checked through regular tasks and assessments, ensuring children are ready for the next stage of learning.
